Designated Regional Areas Overview

According to the Department of Home Affairs, the majority of areas in Australia OUTSIDE of the major cities of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are categorised as designated regional areas for the purposes of migration.

Regional Area Postcode List

A list of postcodes that indicate designated regional areas that are relevant for the following visas:

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)

The regional definition is comprised of:

  • Category 2 – ‘Cities and Major Regional Centres’ of Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, Wollongong/Illawarra, Geelong, and Hobart
  • Category 3 – ‘Regional Centres and Other Regional Areas. Include designated regional area postcodes according to the table below.

*Postcodes not applicable to visas granted before 5 March 2022.
