English Requirements

The English requirement for your TSS visa subclass 482 application is mandatory and will be determined by [IMMI 18/032] whether your nominated occupation is on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), the Medium- and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), or whether the English exemptions apply to your case.

English requirement for short term stream

If your nominated occupation falls under the TSS short-term stream, you will be required to demonstrate your English language proficiency and must achieve the required test scores in a single attempt. Note that your English test result is only valid for three years, and you have to ensure that it is valid at the time of your visa application.

The following are the English language tests and the required results for the short-term stream:

PTE Academic 

Overall score of at least 36 with a minimum score of at least 30 in each band.

Cambridge C1 Advanced

Overall score of at least 154 with a minimum score of at least 147 in each band.

Occupational English Test (OET)

a minimum score of at least ‘B’ in each of the four components

TOEFL iBT

Total score of 35, with at least 3 in listening and reading and at least 12 in speaking and writing

If your nominated occupation falls under the TSS medium term stream, you will be required to demonstrate your English language proficiency and must achieve the required test scores in a single attempt. Visa 482 English Exemptions

Who is exempt from the English language requirement?

If one of the following applies, you are exempt from demonstrating English language proficiency when applying for the subclass 482 visa application.

You have a valid passport issued by one of the following countries:

  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Ireland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America

An applicant nominated by a standard business sponsor for a position to be performed at:

  • diplomatic or consular mission of another country
  • an office of the Authorities of Taiwan

Your nominated occupation requires you: 

  • to have a licence, registration, or membership to perform the occupation, and you demonstrate that you have equal or higher English language proficiency than the required scores to be granted the licence, registration, or membership.

Your nominated occupation requires you:

You are:

  • an employee of an overseas company who, as a standard business sponsor, nominated you to work for their Australian branch under the approved nomination.
  • You will be paid an annual salary of at least AUD 96,400.

You are:

  • You have completed at least 5 years of full-time study at a secondary level institution, with the majority of classes taught in English.
