If you are a General Plumber wanting to migrate to Australia under a skilled migration program such as visa 491, visa 190, you must complete the compulsory skill assessment. This is one of the most important requirements for your visa application.
Job description
Installs and repairs water, drainage, gas and sewerage pipes and systems other than water-based fire protection systems. Registration or licensing is required.
Tasks Include:
- preparing and/or studying plans and specifications to work out the layout of plumbing systems and materials needed.
- finding and marking positions for connections
- cutting holes through walls and floors to accommodate pipes.
- measuring pipes and marking cutting or bending lines
- cutting, threading and bending pipes, assembling and installing piping, valves and fittings, joining pipe sections and securing pipes.
- testing lines as required by local plumbing regulations.
- installing equipment such as boilers, pumps, heating and cooling systems, gas appliances, water tanks, water heaters, solar water heating systems, and fixtures such as toilets, wash basins and industrial processing units
- maintaining and repairing plumbing systems
Skills Assessment Criteria
A General Plumber is a licenced trade, so you must have your OTSR to obtain provisional registration, which allows you to work as a General Plumber in Australia. It is also essential to understand that each state and territory in Australia has its own set of rules and regulations.
Pathway 1: Licensed Trades
As part of the skill assessment application process, you must have:
- 6 years of work experience with no formal training OR
- 4 years of work experience and appropriate formal training. Formal training is defined as training that adheres to the national training standards in your training country.
- at least 12 months of work experience in the last 3 years.
- full-time employment with at least 38 hours per week is required, employment proof must be verifiable.
Pathway 2: Licensed Trades
As part of the skill assessment application process, you must have:
- an accepted Australian qualification relevant to your nominated occupation.
- at least 3 years of work experience, with a minimum of 12 months of licensed work experience in Australia.
- full-time employment with at least 38 hours per week is required, employment proof must be verifiable.
Qualifications
The qualification relevant to this occupation is Certificate III in Plumbing.
Skills Assessment Process
The skills assessment process for the occupation consists of three steps:
1-Documentary Evidence Assessment
A qualified assessor reviews your evidence to ensure you have sufficient work experience and that your Australian qualification or occupational licence meets the Pathway 2 requirements.
2-Technical Interview
A technical interview is a video interview with an assessor who will ask you a variety of questions regarding the skills and knowledge required to work as an Electrician General in Australia.
2- Practical Assessment
As part of your practical assessment, you will be required to finish a number of work-based tasks that demonstrate your ability to perform your trade in accordance with the directions given to you by the assessor. Your evaluation is scheduled to take place at the assessing authority location, and it is expected to last for approximately 8 hours.
Skill Assessment Outcome
If you successfully completed skill assessment with positive outcome you will receive the following:
- an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) that lists the units of competency in which you have been assessed as having successfully demonstrated the required technical skills, and
- a migration outcome letter if the skills assessment is to support your visa application.
Electrician General who has received the Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) can apply for a provisional license to work under supervision in Australia and must complete the GAP Training to get a full license. More information on OTSR and GAP training in Australia can be found here.
