If you are an air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanic who is planning to immigrate to Australia under TSS visa 482 or a skilled migration program visa such as visa 491, visa 190, you will be required to complete the compulsory migration skill assessment. This is one of the main criteria for your visa application.

Job Description

Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics assemble, install, maintain and repair commercial and domestic air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment. Registration or licensing is required.

Job Duties:

  • establishing job requirements from drawings and specifications, and laying out installation reference points
  • drilling holes, installing mounting brackets and cutting, bending and threading piping
  • installing and repairing components such as compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, switches and gauges, and copper lines for steam, gas, refrigerant, compressed air, oil and chilled water
  • bolting, soldering, riveting, welding and brazing pipes to connect equipment, and checking alignment and accuracy of fit.
  • filling systems with gas or fluid to check for leaks.

  • checking and overhauling refrigeration systems, diagnosing faults and repairing and replacing defective components.
  • adjusting system controls and mechanisms and reassembling systems
  • recording causes of malfunctioning and action taken.

Skills Assessment Criteria

An Electrician General is a licensed trade, so you must have your OTSR to obtain provisional registration, which allows you to work as an electrician special class in Australia. It is also essential to understand that each state and territory in Australia has its own set of rules and regulations.

Pathway 1: Licensed Trades

As part of the skill assessment application process, you must have:

  • 6 years of work experience with no formal training OR
  • 4 years of work experience and appropriate formal training.  Formal training is defined as training that adheres to the national training standards in your training country.
  • at least 12 months of work experience in the last 3 years.
  • full-time employment with at least 38 hours per week is required, employment proof must be verifiable.

Pathway 2: Licensed Trades

As part of the skill assessment application process, you must have:

  • an accepted Australian qualification relevant to your nominated occupation.
  • at least 3 years of work experience, with a minimum of 12 months of licensed work experience in Australia.
  • full-time employment with at least 38 hours per week is required, employment proof must be verifiable.

Qualifications

The qualification relevant to this occupation is Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration

Skills Assessment Process

The skills assessment process for the occupation consists of three steps:

1-Documentary Evidence Assessment

A qualified assessor reviews your evidence to ensure you have sufficient work experience and that your Australian qualification or occupational licence meets the Pathway 2 requirements.

2-Technical Interview

A technical interview is a video interview with an assessor who will ask you a variety of questions regarding the skills and knowledge required to work as an Electrician General in Australia.

2- Practical Assessment

As part of your practical assessment, you will be required to finish a number of work-based tasks that demonstrate your ability to perform your trade in accordance with the directions given to you by the assessor. Your evaluation is scheduled to take place at the assessing authority location, and it is expected to last for approximately 8 hours.

Skill Assessment Outcome

If you successfully completed skill assessment with positive outcome you will receive the following:

  • an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) that lists the units of competency in which you have been assessed as having successfully demonstrated the required technical skills, and
  • a migration outcome letter if the skills assessment is to support your visa application.

Electrician General who has received the Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) can apply for a provisional license to work under supervision in Australia and must complete the GAP Training to get a full license. More information on OTSR and GAP training in Australia can be found here.
