Job description
Provides care and supervision for children or disabled persons in group housing or institutional care.
Tasks Include:
- assessing clients’ needs and planning, developing and implementing educational, training and support programs
- interviewing clients and assessing the nature and extent of difficulties
- monitoring and reporting on the progress of clients
- referring clients to agencies that can provide additional help
- assessing community need and resources for health, welfare, housing, employment, training and other facilities and services
- liaising with community groups, welfare agencies, government bodies and private businesses about community issues and promoting awareness of community resources and services
- supporting families and providing education and care for children and disabled persons in adult service units, group housing and government institutions
- supervising offenders on probation and parole
- assisting young people to solve social, emotional and financial problems
- preparing submissions for funding and resources, and reports to government bodies and other agencies
Qualification Requirement
AQF Diploma or higher qualification. This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree, Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.
Highly relevant major fields of study include:
- sociology; social, political, economic structures and function
- social policy, human development and function including psychological, physical and social aspects
- general and specialised welfare services and systems
- work with individuals, families, groups and communities
- communication, basic counselling and interpersonal skills
- additional subjects which could include child development, social justice, child protection, mental health, case management, group theory, drug and alcohol issues, crisis intervention, psychology, youth work, working with children and families, community development, juvenile justice, family violence.
Employment Requirement
- Relevant diploma or higher with a specialization in disability services: Applicants must have at least 12 months full time (or part time equivalent).
- ACWA accredited diploma or higher with a specialisation in disability services: Applicants must have 3 months’ full-time or part-time equivalent industry experience.
- Relevant qualification (non-specialised): Applicants must have 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) employment in a disability service setting and performed at the required skill level.
English Language Requirement
All applicants must provide an English proficiency test report within three (3) years from the test date. ACWA will only accept one (1) of the following English language test reports:- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or General Training) - at least 7.0 or higher for each of the 4 test components, or
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - At least 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing and 23 for speaking (total score of 98 points or higher), or
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - At least 65 points for each of the 4 test components, or
- Advanced (CAE) = 185 in each band
