Job description
Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, irregularities and malformations of teeth and associated structures in the mouth and jaw using surgery and other specialist techniques. Registration or licensing is required.

Tasks Include:
- diagnosing dental diseases using a range of methods such as radiographs, salivary tests and medical histories
- providing preventative oral health care such as periodontal treatments, fluoride applications and oral health promotion
- providing restorative oral care such as implants, complex crown and bridge restorations, and orthodontics, and repairing damaged and decayed teeth
- providing oral surgical treatments such as biopsy of tissue and prescription of medication
- performing routine orthodontic treatment
- restoring oral function with removable and fixed oral prostheses
- assisting in diagnosing general diseases having oral manifestations such as diabetes
- educating patients to take care of their mouth and teeth
- leading a dental team which may comprise Dental Hygienists, Dental Therapists, Dental Assistants and other Dental Specialists
Skills Assessment Criteria
The assessment process is for overseas qualified dentists with qualifications that do not meet the requirements for registration with the Dental Board of Australia. It is designed to assess your knowledge, judgement, clinical skills, and professional competence. The assessing authority for Dental Specialist is Australian Dental Council.
The process consists of three steps.
Stage 1: Initial assessment
Eligibility: Minimum 4-year full-time degree/diploma and have held full and unrestricted registration/licence
The initial assessment can take up to 8 weeks from the submission date.
Application fee: $628 AUD
Stage 2: Written Examination
Eligibility: Successful, valid initial assessment
A two-day examination testing your application of knowledge to clinical practice.
Application fee: $2,060 AUD
Timeframe: 5 months from application period to results release (approximately)
Stage 3: Practical Assessment
A two-day simulation-based examination assessing your practical clinical skills.
Eligibility: Successful, valid written examination.
Application fee: $4,635 AUD
Timeframe: 4 to 7 months from application period to results release (approximately)
