Job Description
Teaches academic and living skills to sight impaired students, and promotes students’ social, emotional, intellectual and physical development. Registration or licensing is required.
Tasks Include:
- assessing students’ abilities and limitations with regard to intellectual, physical, social and emotional disabilities, exceptional intellectual gifts, or specific problems of language and culture
- planning, organising and implementing special programs to provide remedial or advanced tuition
- administering various forms of assessment and interpreting the results
- teaching basic academic subjects, and practical and self-help skills to hearing and sight impaired students
- devising instructional materials, methods and aids to assist in training and rehabilitation
- advising, instructing and counselling parents and teachers on the availability and use of special techniques
- stimulating and developing interests, abilities, manual skills and coordination
- conferring with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons for special needs students
- preparing and maintaining student data and other records and submitting reports
Qualification Requirement
Completion of a minimum of four years of full-time higher education or the equivalent amount of part-time education. The studies must include an initial teacher education qualification, this includes qualifications assessed at (AQF) Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 or higher, which includes:
- at least one year full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education (university) level study of initial teacher education
- completion of at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting.
Special education study requirement
Completion of a minimum of four years of full-time higher education or the equivalent amount of part-time education. The study of relevant special education resulting in award of a qualifications assessed at (AQF)Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 or higher, which includes:
- If this study is a component of the initial teacher education qualification, then the supervised teaching practice must be completed with sight impaired students.
- If this study is separate to the initial teacher education qualification, then the special education study must include a minimum of 30 days of supervised teaching practice with sight impaired students.
English Language Requirement
English competence must be demonstrated by all applicants, and only one (1) of the following will be accepted by AITSL:
Option 1
Complete at least four years of full-time education or the equivalent amount of part-time education at a university in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America. The studies must include an initial teacher education qualification, which includes qualifications that are equivalent to the AQF Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral levels of education.
Option 2
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Test requires at least 7.0 for each component (reading and writing) and at least 8.0 for each component (speaking and listening).
The applicant must provide an English proficiency test report within three (2) years from the test date.

- Passport and passport photo
- Proof of identity, including a national ID or driver’s license
- Qualification certificate and academic transcript (Initial Teacher Education (ITE) qualification)
- English language proficiency evidence
