Navigating this process, understanding the requirements, and gathering the necessary documentation can be quite challenging. Insufficient execution of this step may lead to delays or unfavorable outcomes for your application.

Who is VETASSESS?

VETASSESS Australia is an assessment authority authorized by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to conduct skill assessments for 341 professional ANZSCO occupations and 27 trade occupations that are on the Skills Occupation List (SOL) required for visa applications. VETASSESS, the assessing authority, plays a vital role in assessing the qualifications and work experience of skilled migrants, ensuring they meet the necessary standards to contribute effectively to the Australian workforce.

VETASSESS assesses both professional and trade occupations to ensure that applicants meet the required standards for working in Australia, and the skills assessment requirement is one of the main requirements in the visa application process. Through a comprehensive assessment process, VETASSESS supports the migration journey for individuals seeking to live and work in Australia.

VETASSESS Skills Assessment Process

The VETASSESS Skills Assessment process assesses an individual’s qualifications and work experience to ascertain whether they meet the requirements for a particular occupation in Australia, with the primary objective of facilitating skilled migration. This process entails evaluating the applicant’s qualifications in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and determining whether their employment history is pertinent and meets the necessary skill level for the nominated occupation. The following is a detail of the four steps process:

1. Select Occupation and Pathway:

Applicants must first identify the specific professional or trade occupation for which they are seeking assessment and select the appropriate pathway, either pathway 1 or pathway 2 specified under trade occupations.

2. Document Submission:

Applicants are required to collect and submit a range of documents, which include proof of identity, academic qualifications, and relevant work experience. They must provide references and any supporting materials that demonstrate their suitability for the position. All documents must be in the specified format and meet the guidelines provided by VETASSESS.

  • Educational qualifications include diplomas, or bachelor’s degrees, or master’s degrees or PhDs, and academic transcripts.
  • Evidence of work experience includes employment references, pay slips, tax documents and superannuation.
  • Identity documents included passport, birth certificate, driver license and other relevant documents.

3. Assessment Process:

VETASSESS evaluates the submitted application to ascertain whether the applicant’s qualifications and experience meet the requirements for the selected ANZSCO occupation.

  • For professional occupations, the assessment centers on comparing qualifications to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and evaluating both the relevance of the qualifications and the skill level of the applicant’s employment experience.
  • For trade occupations, VETASSESS evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience against Australian standards specific to the trade occupation with a technical interview. Additionally, some licensed trade occupations will require further practical assessments.

4. The Outcome

VETASSESS will issue a Skills Assessment Result Letter indicating the outcome of the assessment, whether it is positive or not.

  • A positive skills assessment outcome indicates that the applicant has the requisite skills and qualifications to meet the standards of the nominated occupation.
  • A negative skills assessment outcome indicates that the applicant’s qualifications or work experience do not satisfy the criteria. The applicant may also receive advice on options for reassessment or review.

If a reassessment is advised, the applicant may submit updated or additional documents in response to the feedback given.

Why do I need assistance with the skills assessment application?

A skills assessment is a requirement for a wide range of occupations under the General Skilled Migration point test programs. This includes subclass 189, subclass 190, subclass 491 visas as well as the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) subclass 186 Direct Entry, Employer Regional subclass 494 visa and mandatory skills assessments are required for subclass 482 visa.

The assessment’s substantial impact on your application and its complexity may justify the pursuit of assistance. The process of navigating, comprehending the requirements, and compiling the necessary documentation can be quite challenging. If the process is not managed effectively, it may result in delays or even rejection of your application. Assistance may be necessary for the following reasons:

Complexity of the process:

Skills assessments involve the evaluation of your educational qualifications and work experience in comparison to the specific standards established by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). This process can be complex and may require a significant amount of time.

Meet the specific requirements:

Different occupations and subclass visa types have specific requirements for skills assessments. Understanding these differences is essential for achieving a positive outcome in the skills assessment process.

Document preparation:

Gathering and preparing the appropriate personal and employment documentation, including qualifications, academic transcripts, income statements, employment references, and other pertinent documents, can be a complicated task.

Evidence of skills:

If you are applying for a trade occupation, you must demonstrate your skills to the assessing authority. This may involve providing a detailed work history, preparing video portfolios, participating in technical interviews, and, in some cases, undergoing a practical assessment under a licensed trade occupation.

Potential for delays or not meeting the requirements

If your skills assessment application is incomplete or fails to meet the required criteria, it may be rejected or delayed, which could affect the timeline of your visa application. It is crucial to thoroughly review all documentation and ensure that it aligns with the specific requirements outlined by the assessing authority.

Maximizing points for visa applications:

Taking the time to prepare a thorough application can greatly improve your chances of achieving a successful outcome and maximising your claims for points test score. A favourable skills assessment can contribute points to your visa application, especially for skilled migration visas.
