Job description
Diagnoses, assesses, treats and prevents human mental, emotional and behavioural disorders. Registration or licensing is required.
Specialisations:
- Adolescent Psychiatrist
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
- Child Psychiatrist
- Forensic Psychiatrist
- Geriatric Psychiatrist
- Medical Psychotherapist
Tasks Include:
- assessing patients’ mental and physical status to determine the nature and extent of mental, emotional and behavioural disorders
- assessing patients’ medical, psychiatric and psychological histories
- examining patients to determine general physical condition
- ordering laboratory tests, imaging, neuropsychological tests and other diagnostic procedures
- examining the results of tests and examinations to determine the most appropriate forms of treatment
- prescribing and administering medication, psychotherapy, and other physical treatments and rehabilitation programs
- arranging admission to hospitals and providing in-patient treatment
- consulting, supervising and working with other Medical Practitioners and Health Professionals
- determining whether patients require involuntary treatment in accordance with relevant mental health acts
- assisting courts and other statutory bodies in managing patients in legal and forensic settings
- teaching medical students and registrars, and assessing their progress by administering tests
Skills Assessment Criteria
International medical graduates (IMGs) whose medical qualifications are from a medical institution outside of Australia or New Zealand and who are seeking registration to practise medicine in Australia are required to provide evidence of eligibility for one of the following assessment pathways:
- Competent Authority pathway, or
- Standard pathway, or
- Specialist pathway
The assessing authority for dermatologists is the Medical Board of Australia (MedBA).
The Competent Authority Pathway
The Competent Authority pathway is for overseas-trained non-specialists, but is also available to specialists, including general practitioners. This pathway leads to general registration.
IMGs who have passed recognised examinations or have completed training through a board-approved competent authority can apply for assessment under this pathway.
The Standard Pathway
The Standard pathway is for IMGs seeking general registration with the Board. This pathway applies to IMGs who are not eligible for the Competent Authority pathway or the Specialist pathway.
The Specialist pathway
The Specialist pathway is for the following IMGs:
- overseas-trained specialists applying for assessment of comparability to the standard of a specialist trained in that specialty in Australia (specialist recognition), and
- overseas-trained specialists applying for an area of need specialist level position in Australia (area of need)
Documents Requirement
The following is a summary of the documentation list that you need in order to submit your application for the skill assessment. Please visit MedBA for a comprehensive list of all of the document requirements. Documents in a language other than English have to be translated by a professional translator first.
- Passport and passport photo
- Proof of identity, including a national ID or driver’s license
- qualification certificate and academic transcript.
- employment evidence, including an employment letter, payslips, tax return and superannuation.
