Job description
Inspects machines, equipment, working conditions and public places to ensure compliance with government and industry standards and regulations, in relation to occupational health and safety.

- Boilers and Pressure Vessels Inspector
- Gas Examiner
- Lifts and Cranes Inspector
- Mines Inspector
- Occupational Health and Safety Inspector
Tasks Include:
- examining equipment specifications, and inspecting and testing machines, equipment and clothing to ensure compliance with safety standards and serviceability
- inspecting factories and other work sites to ensure compliance with government and industry standards and regulations
- observing workers to ensure protective devices are being utilised according to regulations and that combustible and other hazardous materials are used and stored in accordance with approved procedures
- conducting tests in work areas to detect toxic fumes, explosive gas-air mixtures and other work hazards
- ensuring fire prevention equipment and other safety supplies, such as first aid kits, stretchers and blankets, conform to standards
- assisting in conducting safety meetings and campaigns, and organising training in general safety principles in keeping with regulations
- advising organisations on ways to comply with occupational health and safety legislative requirements
- investigating incidents and fatalities, to determine causes and to collect evidence of non-compliance with occupational health and safety legislation
Criteria for a positive Skills Assessment
Please note in order to achieve a successful skills assessment outcome, a positive assessment for both qualifications and employment is required. Applicants can fulfil the assessment criteria for this occupation in four different ways.
- Qualification(s) assessed at least Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level with a highly relevant field of study and
- at least one year of post qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years.
OR
- Qualification(s) assessed at least AQF Diploma level with an additional qualification at least AQF Certificate IV in a highly relevant field of study and
- at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years;
OR
- Qualification(s) assessed at least AQF Diploma level without a highly relevant field of study and
- at least two years of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years;
OR Pre-qualification
- if all your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF diploma level
- three years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years.

The full skills assessment process for this occupation will take between 12 and 20 weeks from the date you submit and pay for the application to VETASSESS. The time it takes to finish depends on how quickly VETASSESS get all of the required documents and any other information from you. Making sure you've given all the necessary documents in the right format will help cut down on the time it takes to process.
What will I get after the assessment?
When your application for a skills assessment is done, the assessing authority will send you an email with a soft copy of the skills assessment outcome letter.
The letter should contain the required skill level outcome, whether your qualification is assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) or not. Furthermore, it outlines the employment period that you have claimed and whether the evidence that you provided is met or not. If you meet both the qualifications and employment criteria for the skill assessment, you will get a positive result. If you don't, you will get an unsuccessful result.
