About Training Visa Subclass 407
The Subclass 407 Training Visa, also referred to as the Training Visa or Visa 407, is a temporary visa enabling overseas individuals to engage in a workplace-based training programme or professional development in Australia. The training visas provide opportunities for individuals to enhance their skills in their areas of expertise, meaning their occupation must be one of the eligible ANZSCO occupations for Visa 407.
To qualify for the Subclass 407 Training Visa, you must be sponsored by an Australian company that holds an approved Temporary Activity Sponsorship (TAS). You are also required to meet specific eligibility nomination criteria, as well as character and health standards. Additionally, you need to demonstrate how your training will enhance your skills and contribute to the workforce in your home country.
Training Visa 407 Streams:
The Subclass 407 Training Visa has three distinct streams, each with its own specific requirements. It is important to identify which stream you are applying for.
- Occupational workplace-based training required for registration: this stream is suitable for individuals who need registration, membership, or licensing to begin an occupation in their home country or in Australia.
- Occupational Workplace-based training to improve skills in an eligible occupation: this stream is suitable for individuals who have an Australian employer sponsor and nominate them for a position on the eligible skilled occupations list. Eligibility is dependent on the employer’s requirement for organized training at the workplace to improve the individual’s skills for that specific role.
- Occupational training for capacity building overseas: this stream is intended for individuals requiring training as part of their overseas studies or who are supported by an Australian or overseas government organization. It is also applicable for clients who are professional or managerial-level employees of an overseas organization.

Training Visa Eligibility
The following standard criteria apply to visa applicants for the occupational workplace-based training stream:
- Sponsorship: must have an Australian employer who meet the sponsorship requirement
- Nomination: must be nominated for the training program by an Australian employer with an approved temporary activity sponsorship sponsor and meet the nomination requirements
- Relevant occupation: must have a relevant occupation on the training visa occupation list
- Age: must be 18 years or older
- English Language: must have a functional level of English test, IELTS An average band score of at least 4.5, a PTE score of 30, or an equivalent test. Exemptions apply if you hold a passport from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, or the Republic of Ireland
- Relevant experience: must have at least 12 months of full-time work or study experience in the occupation related to the training within the last 24 months
- Health insurance: must have adequate health insurance for the duration of your stay in Australia
- Character requirement: must meet the character standards set by the Australian government
- Financial Support: have at least $5,000 AUD funding evidence to support yourself while in Australia
- Valid Temporary Visa: If you are applying for a subclass 407 training visa while in Australia, you must possess a valid temporary visa that is not a subclass 403 or 771 visa.
Employer/Sponsor Eligibility
To be eligible as a sponsor for the subclass 407 Training Visa, the organisation must satisfy the following standard criteria:
- Legal Operation: The organization must be a legally operating entity within Australia, which includes companies, Commonwealth, state, or territory government agencies, or foreign government
- Commitment to Training: The organization must commit to offering structured and direct occupational training to an individual, unless an exemption applies to certain agencies.
- Approved Sponsor Status: The organization must either be an approved temporary activity sponsor or have applied to become one.
- No Adverse Information: There must be no adverse information concerning your organization or its associated people unless it is deemed negligible by the Department of Home Affairs.
- Nomination: The organization must nominate a relevant occupation along with a specific training program for the applicant that corresponds with the eligible occupation.
- Compliance: The organisation must ensure the training provided meets the criteria for one of the three occupational training streams specified for the visa and provide accurate information about the nominee’s progress in training.

Training Plan Workplace-Based Stream
A training plan is a mandatory requirement for applicants seeking subclass 407 under the workplace-based Occupational Training stream to enhance their skills. This plan outlines the specific objectives, responsibilities, and expected outcomes of the applicant’s occupational training in Australia. It is essential that the plan aligns with the relevant ANZSCO occupation and addresses the individual’s genuine skill gaps. Furthermore, it must clearly specify the roles and qualifications of trainers and assessors.
The training plan is crucial for a sponsor to include in their nomination application, as it demonstrates how the training will improve the nominee’s job readiness and professional skills. The training must be organised and supervised, comprising a minimum of 30 hours per week, with at least 70% of that time spent in the workplace. The workplace training visa 407 is generally valid for a period ranging from 6 months to a maximum of two years, depending on the specific training plan and its duration.
When a training visa 407 is granted, it is subject to ‘condition 8102’, which is mandatory and applies to the holder, restricting work-related activities to those in relation to the training plan as outlined by the Department of Home Affairs.
